I'm not to sure how long you should leave it disconnected for? removing the fuse should suffice i'd guess no need to disconnect wires.

If i had to guess you'd want to leave it off power until the protect led went out.

Maybe try leaving the remote wire connected with the power disconnected and try and feed it a signal to discharge the caps on the board?
