If its higher mileage, use a grade slightly thicker than specified. if its been given synthetic all its life then i would stay with synthetic. if its been given dino oil definitely do not switch to synthetic. as for oil filter choice, use oem or a GOOD quality a/m. dont use motorcraft even if it fits, as it was not designed for that engine. Fram, is NOT good quality. i cant tell you how much engine carnage ive seen working as a mechanic caused by cheap oil filters, or improper oil grade.
