i think the problem is that your clutch is not adjusted right and is not disengaging all the way.

as for sitting at a stop light, its kinda your preference. i pop mine in neutral and keep the pedal down unless im at a long light then ill let the pedal up to relax my leg. my theory is that if you let the pedal up then press it down in a couple seconds at every light then the clutch will wear out faster. but thats just in my mind.

have your clutch adjusted and you should be ok. if not then its probably a problem with the clutch master cylinder or possibly a bad throw out bearing
