While I understand the frustration...I could see both 'generally' being considered gray by someone that isn't familiar with Ford color names (Clips & Fasteners).

Technically I don't believe Ford ever offered a basic 'gray' is an official interior color option either.

Isn't it something like 'medium graphite' (lighter one) & 'dark graphite' (darker one)?

One could technically say 'medium graphite' isn't gray just like you've said 'dark graphite' isn't gray. Shades are a crappy deal!!


All those technicalities aside - it sucks they wouldn't work with you on just swapping the item and being done with it all though.
