The cam synchronizer takes the place of the distributor on Fords with distributorless (EDIS) ignition. They can fail for a couple reasons. Often times there is a chirping noise, similar to belt noise, that is a dead giveaway that the cam synchronizer is on its way out.

The reason its so important to fix it before it fails completely is because the cam synch also runs the oil pump.

Replacement isn't too big of a deal. A new cam synchronizer is about $140 at a dealer, but they can be found online for less. You must use Motorcraft parts or an A1-Cardone reman though because the Dorman replacements have been failing in as little as 10K miles.
