Are you sure it is coming from the engine? Does it vary with RPM?
Nah you shouldn't be screwed. Is it clean like one lifter or is there multiple occurances happening? Fuel system components can make an odd tapping sound also.
There's a magic doohickey I have never got a definitive answer on the name of but it'll tend to make a tapping noise, but it's a little different it's more like a dry fuel pump, kind of like an aggitator ball in a can of paint. It started making the noise when the fuel pump was going. So if you can differentiate the sound you might want to check the fuel filter. The extra details will help us out. Don't sweat it for the time being unless you see a sudden drop in oil pressure, or if you get an oil dummy light, kill the motor immediately! Lucas can save you in these occasions if per say it would be an oil pump failure.
