Should have invoked the usual method that is used in the Seattle region when this happens. Specifically, jump on the gas (or just wood it) stand your ground and enter traffic (or do your lane change). Reason one must be assertive is, if you whimp out and back off, not only will the person trying to cut you off take full advantage of the situation, but so will most everyone else that notices a driver being timid in traffic. Nice, friendly people until they get behind the wheel of a car, then the teeth show and the growling is loud.
