If the thermostat is stuck open, coolant will flow freely through the radiator and the engine will not warm up. The gauge will sit down on cold all the time.
If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will warm up, keep warming up, overheat, over pressurize, and blow shit up. It will be in pieces.
Your present symptom of not warming up fits a t-stat stuck open problem. And the leak is probably nothing more sinister than just a leak. You can't have a t-stat stuck closed and just have a little leak. You have pieces of engine all over the garage.
