Default 90 valves

I was drivin my 90 the other day, and when I got out the engine was stuttering it sounded like. So I took it to the mechanic to see whats up, he said that the valves aren't opening and closing right. He also said it might be a couple other things but I can't remember for sure what they were. Also I know they have been ticking for almost a year now, and in the past month they got a lot louder than they were before. Also it runs fine as long as I give it gas, but once I let off for more than a minute the rpms drop to 500 and that's when you can really hear and feel the engine stutter. I'm hoping that its something not to serious/expensive being as I couldn't afford to fix it again right now, so if someone has any idea as to maybe something else is wrong with it lemme know please!

hard to suggest anything, there is just no info to work off of. compression test would show if valves are not sealing. oil pressure could be dropping. you could have something wrong electrically, which you ought to run a KOER test when the engine is fully warm (youtube EEC-IV pulling codes). could be a lot of things, where you are now, you're going to end up replacing parts that do not need to be replaced if you start taking suggestions on specific things.

Was going to get some of those tests done today but ended up getting to busy to do so :/ but I had him change the oil out real quick as well since I hadn't since I put the tranny fluid in the engine oil (mechanic suggested to quite down the ticking). Since then it sounds a lil better and I haven't noticed the miss, but it still likes to drop rpms once it goes to idle. I'll see what I can come up with after the weekend for more info.
