Default Fixed Fuel Gauge on 87 Ranger

I fixed the fuel gauge on my 1987 Ranger 2.9L. The gauge has never worked since I purchased the truck and I confirmed that the fuse was not the problem. More than likely the Sending Unit was the culprit, but since my truck is 20 years old, I decided to overhaul the fuel system by replacing the following parts:
* Fuel Sending Unit
* Lower Pressure Fuel Pump
* High Pressure Fuel Pump
See the pictures below for the entire process. The total cost in parts for this project was around: $260.00
Filled up the tank and the gas gauge is working fine now.

Cheers.

Fuel tank

Unbolt the two straps from the tank.

Fuel tank cavity

Clean tank with water hose while taking caution not to add water into tank.

Remove sending unit and low pressure fuel pump.

Assemble the new fuel sending unit and low pressure pump.

Assembled!

Install sending unit into tank and mount tank back onto truck.

Remove high pressure fuel pump (attached to frame)

Remove fuel pump from metal housing.

Install new fuel pump and mount back onto frame.

What size fuel tank is that? Iv got the small 8.5 gallon one, and im thinking about swapping it when i do this fix. Did you just test the fuse on the back of the fuel panel to make sure it wasnt that, or did you test it somewhere else?

I just made sure that the fuse was not blown and since it wasn't, I replaced both fuel pumps which fixed the problem.
The size of the tank is around 17 gallons or so. I have the long bed truck so you may want to confirm if this size tank will fit on your truck.

damn Nismo....beat me to it
i basically had the same pics from my 85 build....but i have a mechanical fuel pump

i know the 1st gen trucks are notorious for having bad floats on the sending units
but what would you expect from a 20+ year old truck

normally when i hear of a gauge not working in the older trucks 9 out of 10 times its the sending unit

i went cheap on my 85 build and used one for a boat.....mostly because it cost me around $40 while a new factory replacement would have cost me over $100
not really recommended if you have a really clean truck

my 85 is really rough so i don't care as long as it works...lol

My gauge worked then it sat untouched a lil over a month in the cold now the needle moves but not past the E mark. What fuses should I check and how do you find out what the problem is if its not the fuses.

There should be a diagram on the panel to the fuse box which will illustrate the fuse that goes with the fuel gauge.
If the fuse is ok, then more than likely its the fuel pump. However, since the Ranger has two fuel pumps, there's no way for certain to tell which one is the culprit. I replaced both pumps and problem was solved.

I checked my fuses and all are fine. Filled it up last night got up dismorning and found that my tank is leaking.So could that be the problem. I am going to get a new tank dont really have the money now to replace the fuel pumps but that will be the next thing I do.

Default First post

This is my first post and I really don't know what to say. I have an "87 Ranger that I bought new. I've had it all these years, and It's been so good I just haven't the heart to part with it. I never been in a wreck with it or had any trouble. If anything I guess letting it sit up without driving has taken the worse toll. Now that gas has gone through the roof I've taken another look at the "old Girl." She still drives like a dream. 2.3 ltrs. of pure silk in a 5 speed overdrive transmission. Well I'm here to relearn what I've already forgot. I guess that goes with being a senior citizen. Good luck and rock on Dudes, and oh yeah Dudettes.
