Default No start problems

I'm posting here for dad I deal mostly with jeeps. Let me explain what happened about a week ago he thought he ran out of gas since the gauge didn't work got 5 gallon put it in started up and it drove he was heading home and died on him no start. Got it towed home checked the fuel pump it had real low pressure around 10psi. Swapped it out still no go changed the relay for the fuel pump nothing changed the ecc relay nothing when I jump the relay for the fuel pump it run its getting pressure however it's not starting it will try and fire if I use starting fluid. It has spark just no fuel and i cant figure it out Im stumped I don't know what else could be the problem and he doesn't wanna keep throwing in money in parts. Any suggestions would be great thanks guys. Also it's a 90 ranger 2.9 5 speed

Check the circuit for the fuel pump relay trigger. (the power source that activates the pump relay)

I didn't know where your sentences ended with no punctuation. I thought you said when you jumped the relay it (the truck) ran.

The hot side of the pump relay trigger is the same circuit as the pcm which controls the injectors and all the evap stuff.

My fault when I jump the relay the pump starts but the truck won't run. Even when the pumps on if I spray starting fluiding into the intake it wants to start but never does. We checked spark that's good, I would test for any cel codes however i don't know where the test ports are on a ford

----------

I have a 98 grand cherokee and a 83 cj. The 98 I can hook a scanner up to if I have problems and well the cj with it having a carb I usually don't have problems with fuel. I'm stumped and so is my father

The test port is on the passenger fender well, beside and just in front of the heater box, should have a red cover on it

----------

If it won't start with starter fluid sprayed in the intake then it is a spark or timing problem. Not a fuel problem

yup should fire right up on starting fluid hook up a timing light and see where #1 is with the SPOUT connector removed, should be 10-12BTDC and verify where ignition timing is at.

Yea it's trying to start with the starti fluid but never fires what I don't understand is whenever is hook back up we turn the keep the fuel pump doesn't prime. The pump only runs if I have it jumped. That what I was leaning to something with timing since its getting spark and has t be getting fuel when I jump it. Does any one have any idea why the pump won't prime with the key? Thanks for all your all help so far

I would check the timing chain

Pull the top off the distributor, disconnect the coil wire, then crank it and see if the rotor turns

If it turns the timing chain is intact

If it does not turn the timing chain (sprocket) is broken

I could do that however if the timing chain isn't spinning would it still get spark? Cause its get spark just fuel pump doesn't prime it acts like a bad fuel pump no fuel yet if I jump the pump and have it run still no go for starting could it be something with the key?

timing chain is working if you're getting spark on all cyls. the key here is what it does on starting fluid. it should run briefly. if it's not starting up and running at all, then it sounds like a timing issue. the only thing that comes to my mind is that you need to check that #1 is 10BTDC, SPOUT removed, with a timing light - hook up a bypass switch to the starter solenoid - to check your base ignition timing.

So the question becomes, why are you only getting 7v at the pump? Best I can tell from looking at a 98 wiring diagram, the only thing in the circuit between the relay and the pump is the inertia shut off switch. (and you don't want to cut that out of the circuit, it shuts the pump off in an accident)

Replaced that switch your talking about didn't change anything so traced wires and after a few hours found a burnt spot with in the power wire I replaced it with some good 12 gauge and everything is good to go fires right up no no problems
