Transmission switch for a 90
I have a 1990 Ford Ranger Lariat, the transmission finally gave out a while ago. And I was wondering if I could switch the tranny from my 94 into it? They are both V6, the 90 is a 2.9L and the 94 is 3.0. From research I have already done, it appears that they are also both the A4LD Transmission, which leads me to believe that they will interchange, just looking for some more opinions. If you need any other info just say and I will provide it to the best of my knowledge.

Re: Transmission switch for a 90
bellhousing patterns are different, so it's not a direct bolt on. you could have the bell housings changed, but really you ought to give a call out to a transmission shop and ask what kind of problems you might run into if you had the bell housings changed over. Pretty sure they should both have a 5 pin NSS, that is the first thing I would look at. 2 wires are reverse lights, 2 are NSS, and the last is torque converter lock up controlled by the computer via VSS.

ok, so then for the most part they are interchangeable, just the bell housings are different? Do you think off the top of your head if it might cause problems if I just switch the housings too? I'll give a few calls out to find out more as well, I just want to double check with as many people as possible.

Re: Transmission switch for a 90
I am not much of a transmission guy to be honest, when an auto dies I just replace it with another one. but usually stuff like that is not as strait forward as it seems. I would at least try to find a book and read it ahead of time if I'd attempt to do what you're describing.

Swap the bell housings and it is a straight bolt up swap
Make sure the pilot bushing fits the good transmission before you install it

Re: Transmission switch for a 90
Not sure how else to get started on this, I have a 1990 Ford Ranger Xlt Extended cab, 2wd, 2.9 v6 5spd standard,
I also have a 1999 Ford Explorer with a 4.0v6 2wd Automatic, I recently bought a 1991 Ford Ranger with a 4.0v6, Automatic 2wd, my question is this, can I swap the 91, 4.0 into my 90 Ranger and bolt it up to my 5spd, or can I use either the 4.0 or the auto tyranny in my 99 Explorer??
