Overheating is normally caused by a thermostat that is stuck closed
The cooling system on a Ranger does not have a bypass
----------
As far as the not running all I can say is it depends.
There are 5 things required to make a 2.9 run
1. Fuel
2. Spark (electricity)
3. Timing
4. Compression
5. Computer
You have to check each one until you find the part of the equation that is missing
