Default long crank before start

alright so i just did a quick search with not much luck so starting new thread. this weekend i replaced my fuel pressure regulator, after i went to start the truck and it took a second to crank but i figured that was normal because there was nothing in the regulator yet. so i shut it off and turned the key again and it fired RIGHT up. well after sitting all night it cranked long again and now its happening every time. why?

Sounds to me like it is not priming, check your fuel pressure with the key on and the engine not running
Should be 35-45 psi

Turn the key on - do not start the engine - do you hear the high pressure pump on the frame rail under the drivers seat kick on for a couple of seconds to prime the fuel system?
Pull the vacuum line off the back of the fuel pressure regulator - is there fuel in the vacuum line?
Take a screwdriver press down on the center of the fuel rail schrader valve - the fuel should shoot up about 3-4 inches if it is the correct pressure- make sure you have a rag handy to clean up the mess
Turn off the key

By the way a fuel pressure gauge is cheap - I think they are like $20
Then you would really know and could diagnose the problem correctly

you have air in your fuel line. turn key on but don't start engine, then use a philip screwdriver to gently push in the schrader valve on fuel rail. It looks like the valve on your tire. keep it pushed in until all the air is out and only gas is coming out. keep old rags around it to catch gas. then you should have no problem. our rangers have two fuel pumps....one in the tank is for low pressure and the one under the truck on frame rail is for high pressure.

it's a return style system - air does not get trapped in the lines/fuel rail to the point that fuel cannot get into and pressurize in the fuel rail. air can compress more than gas, but when the fuel starts entering the fuel rail, it puts that air under pressure - and since air is lighter than fuel, it escapes/purges itself through the regulator (that's on top of the fuel rail) back into the return line.

yep.

id be looking at a clogged fuel filter or pump. or even a bad regulator.

he has a 86 ranger 2.9 I have a 88 ranger 2.9. mine did the same thing I had to purge the air from the rail and then it would start right. maybe yours isn't like ours and we do have a return line but it still had to be purged.

You guys are still going on about this but my truck quit doing it after I put some gas line antifreeze in it.
