I have a '90 Ranger with a 2.9L that has suddenly developed a problem starting and staying running. It acts like it is flooded. I've done a tune up on it, but to no avail. It has historically run rich, but now it is to an extreme. It won't even start now. Is there a way to extract error codes without an analyzer, with the check engine light like the old Chrysler products? HELP!!!!

'90 can output codes through CEL. Look at the diagram in the middle of the page; all you hook up is the "SIG RET" to the "STI" with a small piece of wire or a paper clip - then put the key on 'Run'.

First test will be KOEO (hard faults), separator pulse, then CM (codes in memory it's seen) codes will be output.

Might check the fuel pressure to make sure that is in spec, that can have you in circles if it is too low or too high. Also make sure you are getting spark. If it starts on a little bit of starting fluid, most definitely fuel problem.

Thanks for the info, Pete. I do have spark at the plugs and it won't start with starter fluid. There is a VERY strong smell of gas coming out of the exhaust when you turn it over. Almost like it's getting no air at all in the mixture. I'll try the codes and see what that tells me. I'm just at a loss. I'm 48 and used to be a mechanic years ago before computers and fuel injection. Guess I'm a dinosaur, give me a carburator and a screw driver!! Thanks again!!

you could have a fule injector or few stuck open. Has happend to me 2 days after i bought a new set.
