2.9l Dies after a few seconds
I have an 88 4wd 2.9l. It will start and run a bit rough for about 90 seconds. After which, The engine completely smoothes out and the truck dies. It will restart after a few minutes to do the same thing but will not start again immediately. It acts like it is starving for fuel since it just cuts out. It will throttle up pretty good with the gas pedal, so it's not lack of fuel. It just gets to the point where it shuts down.
Such is the problem, here's where I have begun. I have tested the MAP sensor and it is good. Replaced both fuel pumps and filters. I was getting right at 28 psi at the shrader valve. I am now up to 42 psi and still having the same problem. The regulator is good. The inertia switch has been bypassed for now. I did have a spark tester on it when it died and it maintains spark while shutting down. I pulled off and cleaned the IAC motor and it's moving as it should. The relays still run after the truck dies and also kick in immediately after turning the key at any time. I don't know if relays will kick out when they start going bad or not. I'm looking for anything at all here. I am fairly versed at turning wrenches and am stumped here...

Try cleaning the EGR valve.

Maybe the throttle body is dirty.
I would say look for vacuum leaks sounds like you have covered just about everything else

Re: 2.9l Dies after a few seconds
That's a tough one for sure. First thought I had was to check the timing with the SPOUT out (should stay 10BTDC). Maybe distributor gear pin snapped somehow(?), and it's just slipping around causing intermittent running?
At what state was the 42PSI checked? Have you checked the vacuum line for raw fuel?
Have you pulled codes? Youtube has a lot of videos on this for ECC-IV Fords, free with out a reader.
When it dies out again, pull an injector plug off any injector and get a hold of a 194 bulb; bend the pins out, put them in the injector connector and make sure you're still getting an injector pulse.

Re: 2.9l Dies after a few seconds
Fuel pressure was tested at key on engine off and during operation. No fuel in the lines. No trouble codes. I'll have to try the bulb test and check the timing tomorrow. Thank you!

How old is the fuel?
Ethanol fuel can go bad in as little as 30 days, even less if any water gets to it
Turns into turpentine & doesn't smell like gas when it does turn

Inspect the throttle body for deposits around the throttle plate.

Re: 2.9l Dies after a few seconds
The timing is good and the injectors still have power. I opened the butterfly on the air intake and cleaned it out with intake safe carb cleaner and a toothbrush. All of the fuel was drained and replaced before I changed either filter or the pumps.

Re: 2.9l Dies after a few seconds
did you check the injector pulse, or for just 12 volts? They get 12v all of the time, and grounded by the computer. If the computer is not grounding them, then you don't get any fuel. Timing needs to be right, but spark, fuel and compression is all it takes.

Go to your local auto parts store & buy a set of NOID lights, they are cheap and the only way to really test for injector pulse
----------
A flashing light is correct
A steady light means you have a problem
No light means there is no power to the injector harness
