It is the tube looking cylinder on the passenger side of your upper intake, two small bolts and one electrical connector
The new one will come with the gasket
A very (VERY) small amount of gasket maker to hold it in place and help with the seal
Not so much that it squeezes out when you tighten it down

I ought to be good, spent 20 years working on helicopters
This Ranger is my 12th project car
Started with a 68 firebird, still kicking myself for selling that one
Everything before this one was carborated and a Chevy
This is the first time I have touched a fuel injected motor
Probably the last too, my latest project is a 51 Willys jeep with a carborated 289

Still have not gotten an answer to my original question
What controls the air/fuel mixture on a 1988 2.9 motor with the MAP sensor controls

Might be wise to check the coolant temp sensor for the for the ECM...not the one for the gauge cluster, it has nothing to do with one feeding info the ECM. If it the coolant sensor for the ECM, is under reading temperature or not working, the the ECM continues in HIGH fuel delivery.

Ok, talked to a retired Ford tech friend of mine and he said there should be an Orange wire from the wire harness near the distributor that gets grounded to the rear of the engine on the passenger side. If you lose ground on that wire, the engine will run very rich.

I actually have a temp sensor for the ECM side, I will install that and I will triple check the ground (I know it is good, but I will check anyway)
Due to other issues I have replaced every sensor except the temp one

----------

By-the-way if the temp sensor for the ECM was bad wouldn't it show a code?

OK replaced the ECU temp sensor, replaced the O2 sensor while I was at it.

Triple checked the orange ground wire by the distributor

Checked for vacuum leaks

Now we will see if the unburned gas smell goes away and the gas mileage improves

Change O2sensor at exhaust and make sure your alternator is running at 14.4... That fixed mine

New alternator it reads 14.74.
Smells better, seems like less unburnt fuel, don't know if the MPG is any better yet

----------

OOOPS make that 14.47

I think you are asking what is the formula for mpg

Take the number of miles you drove, divide it by the number of gallons of gas you used to go that far

ie: I drove 142 miles, I used 12 gallons of gas

So 142 divided by 12 = 11.8 mpg
