Red face 93, in rough shape. Where to start?

Howdy fellas,

So, I'll start this post by saying I'm really excited. I just aquired a 93 xlt, it's still a solid truck, but has it's problems. I hope to fix this baby up and do most of the work myself. I'm not the most experenced under the hood, but I follow directions well and I want to learn.

Here is the problem,
When your start the truck, it runs real rough. When you drive the truck it runs even more roungh. I think there is an injector that is clogged. When it's in park, at the tail pipe there is visable exhaust and you can smell the fumes. it seems the the visable part of the exhaust pulses with the engine running rough. I have had this truck for 2 days now, and knew what I was buying. The PO said the injector was clogged, and I have no reason to not believe him.

Do you guys think it's the injectors? If so, how do I get to the fuel rail on this truck? I have only had about an hour to look under the hood before it got dark tonight but I'm afraid I can't figure out how to get to the rails. Also, how can I figure out which injector the miss is in?

Do you see white smoke? And moisture ? When I got my truck, the ass hole put stop leak in the engine to cover a cracked head and blown gasket, when it re blew a day later , it ran rough as described and te white moist smoke told me blown head gasket

White, also there seems to be something dripping from the tail pipe.

----------

so, if it's a blown gasket and a cracked head, how much am I looking to put in this truck at the start? I allready drove my first car for 9 years, until it died. I hope I didn't aquire another money pit...

Yikes, those are scary words!

this truck was given to me by my father as a "project truck", he thinks it's silly how I am still driving my first car I got when i was 16 just because I can still make it run. It came at a good time though, but it sounds like it may not be worth the trouble...

That really sucks, I was so looking forward to this truck. My old man drives a f150, and I love his truck.

now I'm not going to sleep tonight thinking about how I'm going to have to tell him about it over breakfast in the morning...

How could I show my old man that the head is cracked/gasket blown? I'm not sure he is going to take the news well?
(yeah, thats a noob question)

Well a compression test would be easiest for you at home , there is also a chemical process shops use. Lastly check your plugs I'm sure at least two on one side are shot to shit. Sucks I know like I said I had to replace my engine a day after I bought my ranger

look at the spark plugs...if they are snow white it means coolant is getting burnt

How much do you fellas think this is going to cost me? I know it's going to be a lot, but what should I be expecting?

You need to narrow the problem down. Try a cylinder balance test. Try a compression check. Try pulling off plug wires one by one when truck is off, start it, then turn it back off, and repeat until you find the one that doesn't make a difference when it's disconnected. Like someone else stated, look at your plugs. Check condition of your rotor, cap, and wires. Check for a blown FPR. You have no idea what is wrong, so there is no way that anyone can guess at the cost.

Edit: And your engine is probably a 3.0L, not a 2.9L. They were discontinued in Rangers in 1992.

Hold the phone. You have white smoke, and some moisture coming out of your exhaust and it's running rough correct?

Probable causes for the smoke- It's cold out, or you're burning oil.

The dripping- Moisture develops inside the muffler overnight or even if left cold for a day and drips out when you start it...

Probable causes for rough idle and drive- Fuel injectors, Mass Airflow Sensor, Idle air control valve, bad plugs.

Do not go thinking you have a headgasket blown yet, you only have 2 factors that you are taking into consideration here, the smoke dripping of water, and engine running rough.

Get some injector cleaner for starters and put that in the tank and have it idle for a bit (15 min) to see if that helps at all. If so you just saved 1000 bucks. Good job.

If not, start at the most obvious problems, clean the maf, iac, and plugs and see whats happens. Good luck bud.

New engine or rebuild is 1500 and up. However of you need a head job and you have low miles just do head jobs could cost a grand or so. Like everyone els said just locate the problem before you get to upset
