Default 87 ranger just will not start

I have recently purchased a 87 ranger for my first vehicle , but it was not running. My friend said he was positive it was just the fuel pump. What the initial problem we discovered was that there was no power even getting to the in-tank pump or the lift pump. We tried new relays and every thing to try to get power to the pumps. After not being able to figure out why we could not power the pump we just ran a direct line to the pumps form the fuse box.So now that we have fuel getting up the fuel rail we put new plugs and ignition wires, and ignition coil on ( because they were bad obliviously). We know fuel is getting up there, its turning over, we now there is spark my friends ears can attest to that after trying to get t it going with starter fluid and it back firing. Its just not wanting to start. So now we are thinking its the fuel injectors either not getting any power or just being clogged up. I came here because i wanted some more ideas , opinions and some advise.

It should not be back firing. Make sure the distributor is set on tdc #1, the cap and rotor are not cracked or damaged, and the wires are correctly installed. If all is OK, you might want to run a compression check for low compression in one or several cylinders. How many miles and how long has it be setting?

To much starting fluid ,yea it may back fire ! That crap is trouble in a can . I had much the same trouble starting a motor ( same 2.9 ) that had been sitting . And yes them injectors will seize shut , pry them out" genlty" pull the O rings and the cap off the bottom ,, using carb cleaner soak them good them GENLTY push the needle or the pin or what every its call on the bottom of the injector untill it is loose . GENLTY !! It has a sharp point for a reason and it MUST stay sharp ! I used hard wood ! Worked foe me ! OH 1 more thing that pin moves very little so it don't take a lot . put 12 volts to it see if it clicks !

Hey I just went through this see my thread " injectors not firing"
Turned out in the end to be a bad tank of gas
The gas was clogging the injectors so they were not able to do their job
You can actually see the bottom of the injectors with a 1" mirror if you remove the upper intake
The other thing that I found hugely helpful was I bought a set of NOID lights at my local parts store they were like $12 or something like that
You can pull the plug off an injector and plug in the NOID light that fits (my set it was the one marked for a Geo)
That will tell you if the elec. signal is getting to the injector telling it to open or not
There should be 12V at one of the prongs in the injector harness with the key on
Good luck, don't do like me and just throw parts at it, figure out what the actual problem is first with some troubleshooting

Oh by the way don 't crank the motor with the coil wire attached to the distributor and the upper intake removed. If it does fire you will have to wait for the eyebrows to grow back

If you disconnect the fuel line (coming from the fuel pump(s)) that connects to the fuel rail, and turn the key to the ON position three or four times, you should see a stream of gas shoot from the fuel line eventually. Sometimes the the fuel pump and lines must be primed like this to get gas to ever reach the injectors, especially at times when installing new pumps or if you run out of gas. After you have established that gas is indeed shooting like it should out of the fuel line that connects to the fuel rail, re-connect the line and move onto the spark plugs. You can test for spark by having a helper try to start the engine while you touch a spark plug to a piece of ground on the vehicle. The spark plug should still be connected to the wire and distributor. Wear rubber gloves and dont get electrocuted! You should see a spark when you touch it to metal. If you are getting spark and gas, then it could only be two more things : the distrubutor is not installed correctly (find threads about locating top dead center), or the fuel injectors have failed. Most likely, all four fuel injectors have not failed and it should still start even if it runs badly. If it backfires when you try to start it without adding starter fluid, then your timing is off (again, find threads about top dead center).

At this point i have cleaned the tank, fuel lines, put new gas in, while i was putting the manifold back on replaced the gaskets while i was there in addition to what i have all ready done and replaced.
The truck will start up and run off either. so the only problem is the fuel is still not getting past the injectors even after cleaning them putting new filters, pin-tile caps, o rings and every thing. I checked the pressure at the fuel rail and thats fine. There is power getting to the injectors and it is highly unlikely that all 6 injectors went bad, so i am thinking that it might be a bad ecm is there any way to test that.

The easiest way to check if the ECM is getting the signal to the injectors to fire is with a NOID light
Easy to install on the connector that goes on the top of the injector
A solid light means you have a problem, a flashing light means the ECM is working correctly
