Question Ticking in Engine/Slight Ignition Problem

It is a 90 ford ranger xlt with 2.9L Automatic, 245K on odometer, but told it was closer to 90 - 100k with something did about the engine. Idk anything about cars though.

When I start it up there is a ticking sound coming from what sounds like the top of the engine near the center. My cousin says likely I will have to replace the engine sometime, but I am unsure since I would also have a new starter I didn't need if I had listened to him lol. I changed the oil and oil filter not long ago and it only has 5 miles put on it since the change. It just has me worried though if that might happen. It drives great and everything and I can't be sure if it ticks while driving because it is very loud due to half the exhaust allegedly missing. Will it be ok or will I need another engine soon?

Also another thing, that I may have narrowed to a short in the starter relay fuse wiring, is that when I first turn over the ignition it will only make a noise like it is trying to start but it won't right away so I either have to hold it a few seconds longer or turn the key back and then forward again. I switched out the starter relay fuse with a new one and it started as soon as I turned it over, then I tried the old one again and still it started as soon as I turned it over. Then next day I tried to start it and it had to be held or turned back and forward again. Any chances that it will end up not starting from that or is it ok? I only think it may be a wire shorting out because moving the wire box to the starter relay fuse when I switched it seemed to fix it until the next day, but idk anything about it really.

Any thoughts on these things would be greatly appreciated.

the ticking are your valves that are located in the head, (above the pistons) are wore out. Many older vehicles do that. My trucks engine made the same noise ever since i had it.

It sounds like it is coming off the belt wheel attached to the air conditioning thing. I been thinking of trying seafoam! I just changed the oil a few weeks ago and it hasn't been driven but 6 miles since then lol.

Thanks for the help guys!

Meant to ask. How bad is that for it to be doing?
