Default Ranger motor swap

I've got a 1986 ford ranger 4x4 5spd with the 2.3 4cyl. This old motor is gettin really weak I really don't feel like rebuilding it... Is there any other motor out there that would either bolt up to my tranny or the tranny I have in my other ranger (2.9 6cyl 5spd 4x4 1991 ranger). Please help

2.9L Bell pattern is same as 2.8L/2.9L/4.0L OHV Ranger engines.
2.3L Bell pattern is the same as 2.0/2.3/2.5L Ranger Engines.

A used 2.3L would be the way to go, while under powered, they usually last a long time. No point in rebuilding that, too expensive for what it is IMO.

Fuel lines, exhaust, wiring harness, computer, transmission cross member might have to move, etc, really depends on what years you're working with. 89 changed up and has different wiring and distribution block instead of inline fuse links like 86-88 (cab wiring plugs are different also). Drive shaft maybe be usable if yokes are the same and wheel bases are the same. Really would have to do some measuring to verify.

this article deals with a 2.9 to a 4.0 but has lots of other general information re: engine swaps.

If your going to swap in a 2.9L or a 4.0L (Hard) why not concider a 2.3L Turbo? (SVO / T-bird engine) The harnesses are almost identical (You can re-pin and add a few wires) the trans bolts right up and the motor mounts work as well. You will get a ton more power out of the 2.3L Turbo (About 230-250hp STOCK TRIM/ECU)
