Default Truck won't start, just makes clicking noise.

Usually dead battery or starter but I had both tested and they are fine, so I replaced the starter solenoid, still nothing. What else could it possibly be?

Take a close look at your cables, also does everthing else work like it should, when you try to start it do the lights dim?

spray some WD40 on the terminals and clean them and it should work, if not replace the positive cable

Thanks for the reply's. No the lights do not dim at all when turning the key and all the lights and radio and everything works just fine. I just got the truck so I can't say for sure but the battery looks brand new I guess spraying some WD40 on it wouldn't hurt but there is no corrosion or anything. One problem may be that it has one of those cheap replacement posts on the negative cable. It seems like it is stable and getting a good connection but who knows. The grounds seem ok as well but I am not sure where the ground that runs directly to the engine block is, does anyone know?

I agree this is most likely a problem with one of the cables. The relay on the fender is clicking? You can use a screw driver to jump the two large terminals together and see if it cranks.

mot of the time cables or connections would be the next step with those symptoms/ but glad you figured it out.

I ran into the same issue today with my 1991 Ford Ranger. Just a loud clicking, the engine would not turn over.

I replaced the solenoid and tested the starter. Starter was fine, as was the solenoid. But, I had to go back under the truck and wiggle the wires leading into the starter to get the engine to turn over. Now it works again!

Is there any good long term solution to this?

new wire and/or new connections, could need tightening
