Default 1989 2.9L V6 having fuel issues

Let me preface this by saying that I received my first Ranger as a gift from my aunt and uncle last week and I am very thankful for it. However there are a few issues with the truck (other than the majority of the paint being destroyed by southern California sun).

The first is that when I fill the tank up completely to the neck of the tank about a pint of fuel leaks out, but after the spill there is no issue of leaking fuel.

Secondly the fuel gauge does not work as it constantly shows that the tank is empty.

I am looking forward to the possible causes and solutions you guys can give me (and maybe associated costs). Any help will be much appreciated.

----------

My best guess is the grommet on the neck of the fuel tank however, I am not 100% sure, so any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You may be filling it into the filler tube, and it could be loose on the tank neck, or have a hole in it. Fuel gauge not working could be a wire boke, fues blown, sending unit or guage bad.

the sending unit is rusting out , replace it about 100.00 total , it is easy, i would remove the bed before i would remove the fuel tank but that is me....

I'm having an opposite issue to yours on a 1990 and am hoping to bum some info from here. Mine seems to favor showing full unless I only put in about $5. If I put in $20 worth of fuel, ~6 gallons here in Oregon, it will show a full tanks and then wind down. So basically if I put in a decent amount of fuel the gauge will function based on that amount, so half will be half of the initial amount. If that makes any sense.

I had the same problem when I bought my 1990 ford ranger 4x4. My gas tank filler tube was rotted on the outside. On the filler tube you have an inside tube which is the direct gas flow from the cap into the gas tank. Then you have the outer neck which goes on the outside lip of the tank to the outside lip of the cap and this tube surrounds the inside tube. (Sorry if its really confusing!) I had to replace my filler tube cuz mine would also leak when I filled up. If you decide to buy a filler tube go to rockauto.com cuz its the cheapest you will find. Trust me take the bed off!! So much easier, but you may have to cut the bolts off. Hope this helps.
