If he took the cap off without burning his hand, it isn't getting hot. Don't need a thermometer to figure that one out. Something is blocking circulation, either in the block or a valve. There a number of different cooling system designs for the 6 cyl engines so it is hard to pinpoint. I don't know what the 2.9 used.

One way to check the core is to disconnect the heater hoses and flush with a hose. I use a hose bib from Lowe's or Home Depot that looks like a graduated point that starts small and becomes gradually larger toward the threads. It also has an on/off tab. I push it into the end of the rubber hose and it seals pretty well. I flush for a couple of minutes and check to see if it runs clear and without any reduction of flow. Do this when the engine is cool only. If that checks out then you've eliminated one possible cause. Are you using the correct thermostat and is it put in correctly? The spring part should be toward the engine. Did you test the t-stat in hot water before putting it in the engine? I've actually had a defective one which I was able to see once I put it in a pot of hot water. It should have opened at 190 degrees, but it only opened a quarter inch even at 200 plus degrees. Saved me a lot of grief doing this.

He tried it without the thermostat installed at all. This ruled out the thermostat. He also replaced the pump already.

Does it look like this

Upper or lower hose possibly collapsed? Partially clogged radiator?

Hopefully not a clogged block or head.

No it doesn't, I would take a pic but its outside and its 19 degrees and dark. Maybe I did not flush it properly. I put the garden hose connector in the heater hose and took the cap off the radiator and undid the pet**** on the bottom of the radiator and turned the garden hose on. I let it flow for a good ten minutes. How do I make sure its going though the whole system ?

drain radiator, insert cooling system flush detergent, fill radiator with water, idle engine until operating temperature with heater on maximum(in your case with a faulty system watch the engine so it doesn't overheat) after thermostat opens run engine about 10 minutes. Give it 15 minutes to cool and relieve pressure. Remove radiator cap and open valve to drain.

Hmm. I don't remember ever putting anything in to prevent backflow.

Attach Back-Flow Preventer Coupler to Flushing TEE and water supply line (black end to tee, Yellow end to garden hose).

14.00 a gallon for antifreeze isn't making ends meet, they gotta make up for it somehow...

It's a T style valve that you attach a back-flow preventer which comes with the flush kit, Just allows you to remove the garden hose without losing any water out of the flushing T.

Lightbulb Re: Please Help. ASAP!

I two am fighting a simuolar problem with my 87 ranger. after changing thermostates, water pumps, raditor, 2 sets of heads, and finally the complete long block engine still have same problem. I feel the coolant is actually boiling inthe engine like a pot of bioling water non the stove thumps when it first starts to boil. through the process 0f elemination I've narrowed down to the catalatic convertor. Be changing mine soon, if it works I can let you know if you havn't fixed yours yet. If you fixed it I'm courios -How
