High idle in park!!!!
soo i got a 1984 ranger 2.8 for $250.. its got 74,444 miles and blah blah. when i first start it up, no matter how warm or cold it is, it revs super high in park. id guess around 3000rpm. for about 10 mins. if i put it in gear to quick it dies. unless its about 50, then i can throw it in gear and it idles normal... how can i fix this? i know its not normal for a car to rev at 3000rpm at start up, plus its loud as hell and pisses my neighbors off...

250 is cheap! Carb, injected, 4x ? Exhaust is whats pissin' off the neighbors. My guess on the high idle is the cold start circut (choke). You'll get your answers (and your moneys worth!) for your truck.

I would suggest buying a can of seafoam and running it through the engine.

Heres the 2 barrel procedure,
Place the transmission in park or neutral.
Bring the engine to normal operating temperature.
Disconnect the plug the vacuum hose at the EGR and purge valves.
Place the fast idle lever on the V step of the fast idle cam.
Adjust the fast idle rpm to specifications.
Reconnect the EGR and purge vacuum hoses.

Thats why you have to manually put it on the step of the fast idle cam.
Operating temperature is so that it idles correctly when you adjust it.

This is idle adjustment, its not too difficult. Choke adjustment is a bit tougher. This is a good place to start. You wanna make sure you got fresh fuel and a clean carb before you start twisting screws on your carb. Or you'll be selling it to somebody else for less than 250. Get somebody to help, they start it you watch. Get a manual, search for images, discover the joys of carbs!
