Default Running with hubs locked

We are having a debate as to the advisability of running in 2H while the hubs are in the locked position. The manual says no. My son (you get the picture here) is saying someone who has a full size Ford PU runs his with the hubs locked in 2H and just switches back and forth. We are getting a lot of snow on our hill but it does not snow at the lower levels so it would be easier if we didn't have to stop and unlock the hubs after a few miles just to reverse the process on the way back up. Any thoughts? Will it damage something or just reduce gas milage?

I used to do it all the time on my 90 and the milage loss isn't even that noticeable

I did it years ago with my F150 & F250 manual hubs and everything worked out fine. There's more parts spinning, additional friction, so there would be some slight additional fuel consumed...

Yea I agree, its winter and i keep mine locked unless its nice and the roads are clear or if I'm on the interstate.

Aren't the newer ranger always locked anyways???
I was sure they went to the live system where they are always locked and turning, yet another reason why the rangers got ripped on for getting bad gas mileage.

I know the 98 and 99 models have the vac pvh sealed system that were auto locking, but the vac seals would always go bad and really sucked, and lots of people switched them over to manual locking hubs, so did i lol.

from a tech standpoint. the only thing thats going on is your shafts are turning with the wheels. this may cause more resistance causeing a minute drop in fuel economy. you may feel some resistance turning hard over caused by the u joints buinding a little. long as you dont turn sharp all the time no issue. and i also have my hubs locked in all winter. if i get bogged down or expect some slick spots i shift to 4 hi. there is a positive benifit with the hubs locked in... your front dif gets lubed so things dont sieze.. remember to change diff lube if you submerge it while 4 wheeling
