Default Steam/Smoke Coming From Vents?

Hi, I'm new here and not very engine savvy so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Symptoms:
-Windshield fogging up badly. I try to defrost but nothing will get rid of the condensation.

-Appears to be a large leak near front passenger wheel, large moisture spot left when parked

-White smoke/steam pours from dashboard vents after a few minutes of driving. Has slight chemical smell.

Any idea what this could be given my signature? Maybe heater core? Would GREATLY appreciate any input. Thanks!

First, sucks to be you unfortunately.

Your heater core has sprung a leak. Good news and bad news.

The good news is you can easily bypass the heater core. Under the hood, disconnect both hot water lines from the firewall and just use a plumbing fitting and hose clamp to connect them together end to end. That will stop the coolant from pouring out into the truck and filling the cab up with ethyl-dimethyl-nastyshit.

The bad news... replacing the heater core is real bitch that requires significant dashboard disassembly and removal.

The really bad news... You live in Wisconsin and it is mid-october now.

Same thing was happening to me. I just bypassed it. Don't really need a heater in Texas anyways.

Yep, heater cores split a seam, and has posessed your car. You get to replace it. Hopefully you won't have to drop the steering column, loosen the dash and pull it out a few inches from the firewall, to replace the core.

I am pretty sure that the gen-1 trucks have the easiest heater core to change in just about anything that's ever had a heater core. Gen-2+/89+ are a bitch, though.

Ugh alright

Thanks for the help everybody. Is this something an absolute amateur could attempt if I picked up a Chiltons?

94 and older ranger heater cores takes about 15 minutes to change. unhook the two hoses in the engine bay, remove four screws under the dash, slide core out, slide new one in. hook back up. top off cooling system.

95+ requires removal of dash.

All fixed!

Brought it to a mechanic friend and he replaced the heater core pretty easily. I guess the bottom rusted through and that was causing the antifreeze leak. No more steam or condensation when I'm driving.

Thanks for the help!

Nice. Clamp off those two hoses gently with flat channel locks, or just let the fluid flow all over as you change the core?

I hate to be the one to say it, but we told you so.

Where are the 4 screws under the dash? Behind the glove compartment, or over on the driver's side? I'm replacing the heater core in my 1988 this weekend.

the heater core is on the passenger side. behind glove box. look under the hood and look for the hoses going to the firewall. that's where it is.
