Default What would you guys do?

So the 86 Ranger I was given hasn't been started in a couple of years, but I was told it ran great when parked. I've got 2 new fuel filters for it, everything for an oil change and all the tune-up bits I might need. Now, it's at a customers house way out in the middle of nowhere and finding a trailer might be a challenge for me right now. I was told it has barely any gas in it, so what I was thinking was taking my big jerry can full of premium out there, dumping a couple of bottles of injector cleaner in the tank first and stealing the new battery out of my Explorer and seeing if it will start.

Should I wait for a trailer to be available, or go this way?

Go for it!!!! just check fluid levels first, and tire pressure.

Don't even listen to this guy.
If it hasn't been started in years, You better hope there isn't any fluids in it. You'll need to change the Oil, Antifreeze, Transmission fluid to at least avoid any major damage.
The gas in there is probably varnished now, If there isn't a whole lot (less than an 1/8th tank) than your Premium idea and some (keyword, some not a whole lot) Injector cleaner will be fine. Change the Oil, and before you even connect a gas line, Crank it a few times to get the oil circulated back into the crankcase. While your changing the Transmission fluid, Put some Seafoam Transtune or something like that in there. Your gonna need to clean it out again in a few weeks. now that you've got your fluid situation under control. Change the spark plugs. You an probably get away without changing the wires.
Now your ready to fire it up. hope that there isn't anything else looming in the background

But seriously you will be ok, as long as their are still fluids in the truck and their not sludged. Why would anyone want to invest time into something if they arent sure itll run. How far do you need to rive it?

----------

Look regardless of what anyone says its your call, if you have any mechanical ability you should know bad fluids when you see them. I live in vegas, with dry heat, so a car sitting is no big deal. If it was me id check everything, and start itif it doesnt leak, and runs smooth id drive it, get it home and drop the fluids there, if their is an underlying problem (bad gaskets, seals, ect) new fluids arent going to fix anything, and most likely you"ll have to drain everything again thus wasting money. But like i said your call....

I'm at least going to change the oil and filter before I try to start it, but that can be done where the truck is sitting right now. It's about a 30 minute drive from my house to where it is, so before getting on the road with it I'll drive it around his farmyard for a bit first to make sure it's not going to crap out on me in the middle of the bald-a$$ prairie.

Pretty dry heat here in Southern Alberta as well, but many winters of getting buried in a snow drift. Lot's of mechanical knowledge, it's just that the last vehicle I had to start after sitting for awhile was my 62 Beetle and it seems to be able to handle a bit of abuse!

What ever you decide to do, pour a tablespoon of something like Marvel Mystery Oil down each spark plug hole before you crank the engine.

Well no go. Full front tank of 93 octane, brand new battery and a fluid check and squat. The gauge still read empty for the front tank even with it being full. I'm wondering if either the sending unit is stuck, or it's stuck on the rear tank.

Either way, back out to the beast tonight armed with gas for the rear tank, a handful of fuses and a can of ether. If it blows up oh well, it was free and would make a good candidate for a 302.

EDIT: I should mention that it caught a couple of times but would just not stay running. Touched the gas and it would fall on it's face.

Well finally got it to the shop, and still no go. After cycling the key a few times I get a hiss of air from the schrader valve on the fuel rail. So, high pressure pump is working so the in tanks are shot. Also, the selector valve seems to be shot as it's only reading the rear tank.

Ended up breaking the fuel accumulator between the selector and pump, so going to replace it with 2 canister style filters and can't seem to find the filter after the high pressure pump. Weird.

ok so from a techs stand point i sugest completely drop and drain the tanks. gas looses 2-3octain in a month. and years is bad. take the best pickup pump and put in a new tank especialy if it is rusty inside. depending how the fuel lines are u may need to replace them. new plugs wires and distributor cap. make sure the air filter and hose are not full of stuff. use fresh 89 octain with injector cleaner key on key off 20 times. you should hear the fuel pump run and stop after 3 seconds. every time you cycle the key. crank it over and it should start. also if this is carbrated it may be more difficult. and you may need to set the timeing with the distrib cap and rotor replacement.

Had the box off this past weekend and it looks like power is getting to the tank pumps, but still no pumps. Going to take them out and see if I can't bring them back to life, and if not I found some cheap ones on Ebay. The high pressure pump on the frame has always worked, I just found it odd that both tank pumps crapped out at the same time, but after 8 YEARS of sitting, they're probably gummed up pretty good.
