2.9 ignition help please

Here is the problem I am trying to set timing on my 89 2.9 ranger. I am suppose to disconnect the spout connection to set the timing. I don't know if I am disconnecting the right thing or not but when I try to set the set the timing with a light it runs BAD it jurks and has no power.
