Default What is normal water temp range for 92' Ranger ?

I have a 92' Ford Ranger Supercab with 2.9 V6. I was stuck in slow traffic out in the Arizona desert over 4th of July weekend. My water temp gauge went up to 220 degrees while idling. I know for a fact that all cooling system repairs and maintenance are current. It was just so hot outdoors.

What is the normal water temp range for my make/model? I use an AutoMeter gauge that has no color bands or redline. My mechanic says make sure it doesn't go over 230.

I just hope I didn't do any hidden damage. There are no symptoms of any kind, and truck runs well.

Next time, I'll just pull off the road. I want to install an auxiliary electric fan in front of the condenser. But there doesn't appear to be enough room.

I tried the Water Wetter and have seen a 5 degree temp decrease so far.

So what is the normal water temp range for 92' Ranger, and any thoughts on how I can enhance cooling?

220 is perfectly normal while sitting still on a hot day. No need to stop, pull over, or change anything.

While moving at maybe 25+, the ram air through the grill will hold your temperature between 190-210. Adding a secondary fan may or may not make a difference when you're stopped and it is hot as hell outside.

FYI, a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water at the 12psi cooling system pressure will boil at about 170.

Thanks Matt. I will monitor this thread for any additional replies. I lived in various Northern Virginia towns before I moved to Arizona.

It was well over 100 degrees today driving home. At slower freeway speeds the gauge dropped to about 191.

Matt I think youre numbers are a little off. A 50/50 mix of coolant and water under atmospheric pressure will boil around 230 degrees but the addition of 12-13 PSI which is what a properly working cooling system in the rangers operates under should add about another 35-40 degrees to the boiling point.

Typo. I meant 270. Obviously 170 would be a problem since we're hotter on that under normal conditions.
