X2. The old 2.9 is way out of date and alot of the newer 4 bangers have about the same if not more torque than the old 2.9. It's the same deal as the 3.0. Built for reliabilty and nothing else. Basicly I suggest a either 5.0 or a 5.8 V8 swap.

Note I didn't say i beat the s10, i kept up with him. Like i said, you can feel a slight difference. with the chip. And idk what it is about my v6 but it sure ain't slow. Speed wise yes its slow but it accelerates very quickly. I'll upload a video on youtube soon.
Most likely yours is geared lower than his. Basicly what I'm saying is you might get up to speed a little quicker than the V8 S10, but in the end the S10 V8 will always come out on top in a race with the old 2.9 Cologne V6 engine. You'd have to do some serious engine work to out run a V8 in an S10 with the 2.9 engine to say the least.

That was the definition of my old 2.9, lots of modifications. Raced a 86 TPI 305 Camaro, was right on him until 75 and he just walked away. Building a 2.9L is not worth the money.

The only practical thing to do is to get rid of the OEM mufflers Ford uses on their trucks. I took one apart after it rusted most of the way. The inlet and outlet pipes are 2" in diameter, but both are squashed down to 1.5" on the other ends inside of the mufflers. I am talking about those round rascals. They do this to quiet them down. I use Turbo style mufflers now and it runs better now and gets better gas mileage, but 4 cylinder rice burners still blow my doors off. i am not going to lie to you. I also have an 08 Impala LTZ now and that really makes my 2.9L feel slow. I also think 4.3L S10s will blow my doors off. Lets face it the 2.9L V6 is an older design than most of you, probably. The 4.0L is an outgrowth of the 2.9L and I wonder how much longer it will be around.

Honestly not sure what this talk about "4 banger rice burners" blowing one of these elderly 2.9's outa the water... I've never had one even pass me after the light turns green...
Either you guys weren't keeping good upkeep on the engine.. Or didn't know how to gas/shift lol?

Not that i'm flaming by all means. And also look at the op's post "kept up" Clearly he didn't mean, "beat" "passed" "blew out of the water" "ate my dust" He simply meant "Was able to keep up for a smidge of his life"

I used to rip the hell out of my friend's 96 2.3 SOHC 2wd 5 speed with my '88 2.9L Auto 2wd. He would drop the fuck out of that clutch too. Take off and top speed both were a loss. 2.9Ls ain't that bad, I put my money on a 5 speed 2.9L over a 5 speed 3.0L of similar vintage. Same gearing and tires. Now that's more of a fair comparison.
