Default engine swap?

hey i just had the engine in my 87 4x4 ranger go out on wednesday. i am looking for a new motor, it has a 2.9 in it now with an automatic tranny, but the motor i found is a 4.0 from a 95 explorer, the ad says its the old style before it was switched in ninety six. my question is if the newer motor will bolt up to the stock 1987 tranny

I am a little confused. The "vin X" engines were from 90 - 99?, they were OHV and are basically a direct bolt in with the engine wiring harness/computer and some wire splicing, you will also need to do some adapting to connect the fuel lines, that isn't a real problem. The "vin E" came out in the Explore in 96 or 97 and is a single overhead cam (SOHC), it will bolt in, but other than the wiring harness/computer and wire splicing, I don't know what else might have to be done.
There is a large difference in power between the 2 4.0's, the OHV is rated around 155 HP, depending on the year, the SOHC is about 205 HP depending on the year. I don't remember the torque gain, but the OHV is minimal, 25 pound feet or there about, the SOHC is quite a bit more.
One consideration in this swap should be the condition of your transmission, you are gaining HP/torque with either engine.
I am sure other will reply with more information.

Default 91 Ford Bronco II

We have a 91 Bronco II that had 2.9 engine and now has a 92 4.0 engine--we are trying to wire the engine to make it work--do we need a computer for the 4.0 engine and engine wiring harness? Please advise there seems to be more and more of these types of swaps as people try to get more life out of their vehicles--Thanks

You have already installed the 4.0?
You will need an ECM for the 4.0 that will match what you are going to end up with for a transmission, manual or automatic. The engine will start with either ECM, but when you try to drive, it won't work very well.
Try this link, it is very informative about what you are doing.
