I am a little confused. The "vin X" engines were from 90 - 99?, they were OHV and are basically a direct bolt in with the engine wiring harness/computer and some wire splicing, you will also need to do some adapting to connect the fuel lines, that isn't a real problem. The "vin E" came out in the Explore in 96 or 97 and is a single overhead cam (SOHC), it will bolt in, but other than the wiring harness/computer and wire splicing, I don't know what else might have to be done.
There is a large difference in power between the 2 4.0's, the OHV is rated around 155 HP, depending on the year, the SOHC is about 205 HP depending on the year. I don't remember the torque gain, but the OHV is minimal, 25 pound feet or there about, the SOHC is quite a bit more.
One consideration in this swap should be the condition of your transmission, you are gaining HP/torque with either engine.
I am sure other will reply with more information.
