2.8 would be a fun engine to build a screaming V6, but unfortunately you are about 20 years too late. There are still performance parts available, but support/interest/etc for these old engines is slowing going away. Solid lifters, gear driven cam gear, factory flat tops, duraspark conversion.. mmmmm... But performance in that aspect is going to hurt economy. Hard to have it both ways.
Duraspark would be ideal if you know anything about tuning carbs, that could get you more performance and better mileage over a problematic factory feedback system (sort of an efi/carb half-breed). Lots to learn about carbs, people use them because they think it will be easier, until it comes time to tune them and set timing, and they don't want to take the time to understand what they're working on.
