Default cam sprocket key

Hi Everybody

Does anybody have any pictures or a description of the cam sprocket.

My '87 2.9 stopped running and I've stripped it all down. The bolt holding the sprocket to the end of the camshaft has sheared and there is no key in the keyway of the camshaft. It could have fallen into the sump where the sprocket fell forward on the end of the camshaft but the weird thing is that there does not appear to be a keyway in the sprocket.

So, assuming there is a key preventing the sprocket from rotating on the camshaft, how does it fit into the sprocket?
Any pics would be appreciated.

Thanks
Laurie

Hi Laurie,

The sprocket does not have a separate key preventing the cam sprocket from turning (not like the crank shaft half-moon key); it is cast into the back of sprocket itself. The sprocket needs lined up on the cam and it's simply tightened down.

Edit:

Found a pic of it here, look at the last pic - you can see the integrated key on the back of the sprocket -

Thanks Pete
That makes a lot of sense.
The key on my sprocket has worn away which can only mean that the sprocket was loose enough for the sprocket to be moving on the shaft.

People here in the UK are telling me that the bolt is no longer available, is it available in the US?

Thanks
Laurie

Maybe at a Ford dealership, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Not too sure what would interchange (2.8? 4.0?). Used to have a torn down 2.9L, but I traded all related components for a 5.0L and AOD combo. Think I would start looking on a bunch of Ranger related forums and post a "wanted to buy" ad and see if you can find anyone with a spare. Or do what you can to determine the thread and see if a machine shop would have any good ideas. Looks like it's going to be tricky to find short of pulling one from a junk yard.
