Default 1989 4X4 Ranger 5 Spd 2.9 ltr

Are the rockers on the 2.9 self adjusting? I have a ticking sound coming from my engine and it sounds like a rocker arm

They are kind of weird, they are self adjusting in that they are hydraulic lifters, but they are adjustable like it's solid lifter cousin, the 2.8L. In theory, they should never need adjustment. 2.9Ls are known for poor oiling systems. When it comes to adjusting these valves, you really don't want to go there. That's something that usually ends up being worse than what you started with. You can't do it while it's running, either, based on where the adjustments are.

But common causes are clogged rocker arm shafts (remove them, inspect, clean), low oil pressure, worn cam bearings, worn lifters/cam, lots of variables, with the last 3 likely calling for an overhaul. Tick is the #1 2.9L complaint. Most just deal with it, but let us know what you come up with.

Can't just change the lifters easily (and it's not recommended on an old high mileage flat tappet camshaft), but the heads need to come off to get those sucker out.
