Does it have a plate between the engine and transmission that locates the starter? Do you see anything that would prevent correct alignment between the engine and transmission?

I actually have the same problem on my 89 ford ranger, it grinds a small amount on the start, then catches, there is a plate between the starter and transmission, would that prevent correct alignment??
