Default 88 ranger fuel gauge

the bed is off my ranger, now im trying to find the problem with my fuel gauge, ive ben told you can test the sending unit it is currently out of the tank, so how do i test this?

hook the wires up to it. Ground the unit to the chassis someplace that makes a good ground. turn ignition on and move float up to top . This is full position. Move it as needed . But be sure to maintain a good ground or you are out of luck. Very easy to do. Take your time is the key.

If you ground the wire itself, the gauge will be pegged full. If you disconnect the wire, it will go to pegged empty. It should do as earl said when connected, if not, then its toast.

My 88 had a brass float in it, somehow it got a hole in it, filled up with gas and wouldn't float. So it always read empty.
Hopefully the top of your tank isn't as corroded as mine was to get the unit out. That was a pain.

As long as it floats you can just about use anything as a float. I used a piece of wood as a float on my '32 many years agp. If you do have a hole you can get a float at a parts place,Speedway,summitt,Jegs or the like.

well i put the float to full and watched the gauge it was plugged in and i hat it grounded to the tank and ide flick the little box the float conects to and it moved ever so slightly..
