Well you can duct tape a camera under there and get video.
It can't be a good thing if it's in the drivetrain. . .

mrdadeink,

I had an issue like that until I took my Ranger in a lube shop.
The manager there taught me that the heat guard on the calytic converter will rust apart and just sit on top of the converter and rattle. It sounds like a chain dragging or loose bolt and nuts. In my case I had a heat guard over my tail pipe too. He simply pulled it out. Either way it won't effect your Ranger, but it will take a couple of days to get use to the quiet.

So can you rule out the noise coming from the engine? If you rev the engine while you're parked, it does not make the noise, correct?

Check the metal washer on the carrier bearing in the middle of your driveshaft. If it's loose the noise can drive you crazy. (If you don't have the 2 piece driveshaft, ignore this post!)

Old Thread... Check your shocks (air ones), and your wheel bearings. I just found out my right front shock was blown, assumably my left aswell, but the metal from the shocks jingles against the vertical in it, and makes a loose noise if you will.

When my exhaust/Y-pipe was loose it made a horrid noise like I was dragging cans, but it also made the noise when I revved it at a stand still...My wheel bearings werent quite as noticable, but when I was rolling through the neighborhood it did sound like a small chain was dragging...It was quiet enough that I couldnt notice it at high speeds due to exhaust and/or stereo.
