Default 1990 Beater Passed CA Emissions - Almost

Got a EVAP leak somewhere, should be easy enough to track that down...

But, I have some high numbers on a few tests. All the plugs are nice and tan and it doesnt smoke, Im wondering if a bad CAT would make it read high on some tests?

Try a tank or two with some fuel system cleaner in it. Cheveron Techron or Sealfoam (1/3 can). Another third sucked into the intake through a vacuum hose wouldn't hurt either. There are several threads on it that cover it in more detail.

take it down the freeway and get it nice and hot, then leave it running in the parking lot till you get tested, it will keep the cats heated which is where they work the best. also if you run any additive make sure you burn up all that fuel before you take it in, and run low grade good gas, it burns the best in these trucks. high octane fuel is harder to burn so it could potentially not burn completely which would spit out bad numbers for the sniffer.

EVAP problem was failing to completely insert and install the hose clamp on the fuel filler tube when the fuel pump was replaced!

DOH!

Nothing like a bad install to mess things up. Self inflicted or did a shop mess up?

Mobile service. The guys kicked ass, but that was a major oversight...

DAMN! Failed evap still...!!! They want $90 to diagnose it and cant get to it till sometime next week.

Any ideas on how to test/track down where this thing is leaking? I saw a couple of hoses that looked bad and replaced them, and the obvious missing hose clamp on the filler hose. Is there anything that typically goes to cause this in older rigs?

I sure hope these guys fully attached the other end of the freaking filler hose!

Did they give you any codes to work with? It might be something as simple as the fuel cap seal being bad.

Fuel cap passed, Ive read that aftermarket fuel caps can be an issue though... Its always something.

I found a place that will smoke test it for $45, I can take it from there once they show me where its leaking hopefully. Of course I spent 5 hours researching how to build my own smoke test machine...

The fuel fill hose was the problem, should have looked closer when the fuel pump got changed!!! Independent shop quoted me $365 for the part and $180 in labor... Found the part on Amazon of all places for $55.00, not fun looking for this part at parts stores...any of them.

Glad you found the problem. Was there a hole in the hose?

It passed one of the emission areas with a 122 out of a max allowed of 128 or something like that. A nail biter... Should have the part today, Ill get it nice and hot before I have them test it again.

The fill hose had some bad degradation/cracking on the end that attaches to the the tank, cant believe it was missed. Maybe it got damaged when the fuel pump was swapped cause it was brittle.

Always inspect the fill hose (all the hoses on the tank) when you replace the fuel pump on a 20 year old truck...
