what is about the right "rpm" idle on a warm 2.9?

my 2.9 idles at about 600 to 700.

How do you adjust the idle speed of a 2.9

Find someone who can re-program your computer - but I haven't of anyone doing this on a 2.9L. Computer controls the idle - if the idle is wrong, something else is contributing to that.

didnt say it was wrong i was just wondering what was a common idol on a 2.9

mine idles at around 1k with a manual its probably a bit lower on an Auto

kind of on the same thread, I had a p1506 code, and my engine would idle warm at around 1200. I changed the IAC today and my Idle only dropped to just under 1000 ( est 950 ) Im used to my little rice burner idling at 6-700. is this high idle normal for a ranger (3.0 auto ) or does the computer need reset, if so how do you reset the computer. The guy at advanced auto said it will take a while for the computer to re adjust itself (dont know how long a little while is..) any advice? thanks

first off, let me state i'm a first timer. i'm no slouch, but i truly lack credibility in the vocabulary of auto mechanics so forgive me forehand.

i have an '89 5 speed. not exactly sure if you can change it the same way on any ranger past '92.

all i needed was a flathead screw driver. take off the housing NEXT to the fresh air intake into engine (not crankcase, where filter is). you might even be able to get to it without (i did, i just cracked the housing a little bit) you will see a flathead bolt with spring/bridge.

get your engine to operating temperature - if you loosen it, it will lower your rpm. if you tighten it, it will raise.

i know people here say it's controlled by a computer and if you open your hood and read the labels in front you, it will say likewise.

all i know is that i could do it just fine manually by loosening or tightening the bolt.

any chance you can post a pix of what ur talking about. I have a 99 ranger, and I know where the air filter is ( i changed it) but not sure about the other stuff you mention

now, right in front of the engine block (someone ^^^^^already took the housing off) you can see the metal plate with 2 bolts. on top of it is the line you can adjust your RPMs with (see the spring?). at the end of the line (closer to radiator, not firewall) there is a flathead bolt where you can adjust RPMs. unfortunately it falls out of the picture but you should get the idea. when the spring gets tightened your revolutions will be as well.



there is a picture with the housing still on.

That screw is for setting the base idle voltage, this is far from being like a carburetor. Do not mess with it unless you know what you are doing! That's my warning, but ultimately it's you truck...

i guess just make sure your throttle position sensor (TPS) is firing at the right time too. somewhere between 0.6-1.0 volts according to fordfuelinjection.com
