Default OBD code 53

I bought a code reader and used it on my 88 ranger 2.9. I got a code 53. Where do I go to find out what test to do to fix this code? Thanks for any help.

Default Re: OBD code 53

53 is TPS sensor above maximum voltage.

TPS is the 3 wire sensor on the otherside of the throttle lever (the thing that the throttle cable operates to open the throttle plate in the throttle body). What this does is send a signal to the computer to tell it how much throttle your are applying.

Need an analog meter to test it. One wire is gound, one is 5 volt constant reference voltage, and the other is the signal. You will want to test between the ground and computer signal.

TPS should read ~.9 volts idle to just under 5 volts @ WOT.

The needle on the analog meter should sweep smoothly and consistently when throttle is operated.

Test the TPS and let us know what you find.

Default Re: OBD code 53

I was able to test this weekend. I used an analog and digital meter to test. I got 5 volts out of the bottom wire and the middle wire read from 1.1 to 5 volts. I started to drill out the metal in the screw holes and on the second try they started spinning in plastic. I didn't want to go any farther and knock out all the metal. I was able to get the reading to 9.9 and now the top was 4.8. All readings were smooth with no flat or dead spots. I got a high rpm again later for a short time. The test did not show any problems but still is not working right. I am going to erase the code and drive a while and see what happens.
