Default Disable EGR Valve?

Been doing some reading, and one guy said that disabling the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve will give a bit of a power/mpg increase. Anyone done this on an '88 with a 2.9?

Don't listen to any of that kind of stuff unless there's proof to back it up. Based on what I have seen, disabling EGR doesn't really do any good. But - your 1988 2.9L Ranger does not have EGR anyway, only 86-87 models.

K thanks I went and looked for it and couldn't find it so now I know why. For curiosity's sake, has anyone done this and what were the results?

EGR stabilizes combustion by mixing in a little bit of inert exhaust gas at high temps. If an engine is configured with it, disabling it without adjusting the air fuel mixture will give the engine a higher tendency to misfiring. But then your messing with damaging the cats.

actually ... my 89 2.3L just failed its smog check due to "No Vaccum to EGR valve" most rangers from 87 have EGR valves lol ill take pics if needed .... or save time ... go look it up before suggesting that someone does not have an EGR... and agreed ... there is no use to diabling EGR valve ... it will make things worse actually and if u live in california ... youll always always fail ur smog check if disabled

I have blocked mine off. I personally do not think hot exhaust gas into th intake is a great idea. But, I have done motor work and have no cats. My truck bone stock got 20mpg. With everything that I have done to my truck it still gets a solid 17-18 hwy. I don't think the egr valve is going to make "that" much of a difference. Air/fuel is generally controlled by the o2 sensors.... isn't it....?

I cant vouch for any mpg/hp increase, but the 2" hole pumping hot exhaust gas into my intake had to go!

When the computer "opens" the EGR valve, it expects that it's open, alters fuel and ignition timing. Can run into problems running the system like that, best way to remove EGR on a 86-87 2.9L Ranger is to swap to an 88+ computer that didn't have EGR.

My '88 actually had one. It is gone now. I unplugged the battery so the computer had to re-learn the settings, no super improvements but a tad bit better gas mileage and I believe a tiny bit more power in mid-range rpms. And it passed inspection.

That's pretty strange that it has EGR, my '88 2.9L didn't. Door jam even says it was built in Sep-'87, but it's an '88 model year - not in '88 EVTM either. General years for EGR equipped 2.9L Rangers was 86-87. Have a pic of what you removed? I am kind of curious...

It was a vacuum operated valve on the snorkel part of the air intake (the part before the air box). It was connected to a hose coming from the exhaust. At least I assume that's what it was, I can't imagine what else it would be.

Not common at all, EGR was not implemented for the '88 model year 2.9L Ranger. Not in the vehicle specific diagrams from Helm inc either. Either you have a unicorn or someone put '87 stuff in there (or your vins don't match between your title and truck).
