Default Sputtering until you floor it

I have a 1987 ford ranger xlt with 175000 miles on it. On Saturday while bringing a load of wood Back to my dads house it started to sputter and wanting to die. I have 3/4 of a tank, so I know it's not running out of gas. But the weird thing is if u floor it it will run right but if you take ur foot out of it, it goes back too sputtering and wanting to die. It will idle fine when it's not under aload. It starts right back up after it dies idles a little high runs fine through first then sputters. The engine has a bad ticking noise when this is going on. Need some help thanks

No check engine light installed on that model year. Not too sure since it's associated with a sound, may be running too lean and pinging (which isn't good for the engine). Fuel pressure test is the only way to know if the fuel system is functioning correctly, too much or too little fuel pressure is going to cause problems. Think I would start with pulling diagnostic codes from the computer, key on engine off/continuous memory and key on engine running when warm. Think that would help narrow things down.

Possibly a bad plug wire, or fuel filter issue.... Happened with mine last year, found out it was a partially clogged filter, Its happens! Hope it works out for ya!

Sounds to me like an O2 sensor bad. There should only be one at the Y in your exhaust pipe right behind the motor.

keith. Take a look at my post 1986 missing and bucking--solved???
It might be worn throttle cable links, this causes the throttle plate to wiggle with the engine vacuum and the TPS sends bad signals to the PCM(computer).

Good luck.
