That is just crazy that it is so religous about it. If it were a failed regulator, then it would be constant, so on, so forth. I'v got nothing for ya. . . BOL

Pulled from a forum. . .
I had a similar experience once when the fuel tank went below half. I was driving to work and barely made it into the parking lot. The problem was that the in-tank fuel pump was shot. I borrowed a gas can and added 5 gals which created enough "head" on the main pump to keep it running. Try topping off the tank and see if that makes a difference. If it runs OK then continue to drive her with the tank more than half full until your new pump arrives!

Hmm, typically I would google the year and model truck and scan a couple internet sites to check part#'s and prices. Then I would check a local parts house to compare prices and choose when I wanted it. I could recommend going to a stealership but I very rarely do that and especially not to buy replacement parts, unless it would be the only option.
Also when you pull the tank it would be a good idea to check/clean/replace and worn out hose, Gas degrades the petroleum based rubber hoses over time and the black particles can screw with your truck. Just a thought, clean everything you see. . . .

Have you found/replaced the in tank pump yet?
From past experience, when the tank is half full and you can't get it to siphon out, (not uncommon with Rangers) it is easier to pull the bed than the tank. Six bolts, a couple wiring plugs, and three friends. If the bed has never been off, the bolts can be difficult to say the least.

Wish I could help. There have been times when I've needed a hand and didn't have one.

are you sure forty sounds high for something that is likely throtle body injected. I know you can find some in-line units that can really get high numbers. The best about that is it would be a one man job.
