2.9 wont start, no fire
My 89 bronco 2.9 shut off on me going down the road today and i cannot seem to trace the problem. I changed coils, ignition module, computer. and nothing has worked. I have power to both sides of the coil, and still no fire. I do not know how to check the coil but it ran another truck so i pulled it from it to put on mine and still nothing.. Any help would be appreciated. fuel pump does kick on and run Thanks

89 model sounds like high mileage, so sounds like internal engine problems like cam or distributer broke if you have replaced all of these electronic components.

Re: 2.9 wont start, no fire
you say it wont fire.does that mean no spark? if it has spark you may not be gettin fuel, check your emergency fuel shut off switch, its on passenger side of the hump inside truck towards top of carpet, hit the reset button on it. see if you can hear fuel pump. or it could be the relay under hood(green relay).if none of those take TFI module off distributor and have it checked again. hint check it at least 6 or 7 times if any bad checks get another one.

Does the timing chain have anything to do with it?

Re: 2.9 wont start, no fire
It's recommended that the pick up coil in dist and TFI to be replaced if either or fail. I'd be tempted to try and find a good working dist to drop in.

Re: 2.9 wont start, no fire
How can you tell if it's the computer?

Re: 2.9 wont start, no fire
I don't think there's any reasonable way of testing if the computer is the cause of the dying TFI modules short of replacing it with a new or used unit. '86 doesn't have a check engine light, might be worth while to run through diagnostic tests and check for codes related to the ignition system.

Re: 2.9 wont start, no fire
I had the same problem. It was the switch below the dash under the carpet on the pasengers side. It has a white button on top. Take it off and wire it together, maybe that's the problem.
