Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
Every time I fill up my '89 Ford Ranger at every station I've been to the pump will constantly cut off during fill-up. I've tried pulling the nozzle further out of the gas tank and pushed it in as far as possible (and yes moved the nozzle in every other possible direction, even turning the nozzle upside down), but the pumps still cut off and will never continuously fill the car. Thanks
...im pretty sure the vent in the gas tank must be clogged or something, any ideas?

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
You're probably right but the vent tube runs right along the filler neck from the tank to just outside the inlet.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
I've seen that before on other cars. Sometimes it's the speed of the flow going in. May be too much for the vent for the exchange.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
Some cars back in the day (always wanted to say that) were fitted with a plug with narrower hole in the filler neck, had something to do with early methanol or somesuch. Look in the neck for any restrictor. I have one car with gas vapor filters which greatly slow the gas filling process.
Use the extra time to reflect on how great your life is, take some deep breaths, and thank God you can get gas at a reasonable price, for now.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
Mines done this as well as my lady's 2005 4runner, its only started recently and only at stations with new pumps. Somebody must have decided to make the pumps faster without thinking about if it would work with the cars.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
If you want a slower pump you should come to the bp station down the street from my work we use... the pumps are so slow it takes 30 minutes to fill up the f350 at work... I have only used one pump that kept cutting off on me.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
My 2003 Ranger is doing that too. I have to pump the fuel very very slowly. I haven't been able to find a solution yet. If I do, I'll post what I find here. and would appreciate if anyone has ideas on what I can try to find the problem.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
Mine started doing this right after I had my magnaflow exhaust put on...ended up that the vent tube was melted closed.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
on my 90' the fill tube in a 3/4" tube that goes inside the larger 3.5-3" vent tube. i have to use older gas stations to beable to avoid the same problem.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
You need a new fuel filler tube to the tank. It collaspses (spl?) over time. I had two trucks do this.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
Ok, I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel neck, and all the lines between. There is no binding, or kinking, or pinching of the lines. We pulled the bed off to do it so that we could make sure it was all good because I have heard the horror stories. Still have the slow fill up, I can't find a pump slow enough for it.
The small vent tube that runs externally alongside the filler neck goes to the pump and I think it is to displace air as the pump is running. Is there a straight to outside air vent from the tank somewhere? Someone somewhere mentioned that overfilling will clog a charcoal filter somewhere, possibility? Someone on another site mentioned a "roll-over" valve that might be clogged.

My canister was clogged for some time and I never had this happen.

Re: Gas pump constantly shuts off during fueling
I have been around cars my entire life (born 1965, Dad had a Sohio station, I was terrified of air tools, lol), this is a first for me too. I cannot for the life of me even guess what else it could be. Anyone have a factory assembly book for Rangers? I had one on my 67 chevelle, helped a ton to have it. Chilton, Hayes have nothing. All I want is a line drawing of the fuel system, ALL of it, and I can figure it out from there.
