Default 1988 Ranger 2.9L how to get better gas miledge?

Hi you all

I have a 1988 Ranger XLT with 2.9L V6 its in the shop getting a A4LD trans rebuilt. I have 175K on it runs good what are the tricks to getting better gas miledge and pass California Smog? I thinking of getting a K&N panel filter to replace the Fram one. Any other ideas?

The best way to get better fuel economy with a Ranger is to put a FOR SALE sign on it and go buy a Prius.

Motorcraft plugs gapped properly, Motorcraft wires, cap and rotor.

NAPA Gold air filter in the stock cold air intake.

Make sure the sensors are all working propperly, including the cat.

Properly inflate the tires.

Synthetic lube in the dif, xnfer case,a nd transmission.

I'm running an '89 BII w/ 5 inches of lift and 235-70 15" Michelins, and I average 20 mpg.

Not stellar, but considering the work I do with this little truck, I'm very happy with that.

Maybe Ceramic headers would do the trick. I did that to mine. Let it breath a little. Passes California Smog no problem. KEEP THE RECEIPT

yes, the manuals tend to get much better mileage behind the 2.9 than the auto does. Its no where near as much of a pig either. Daddy's ranger will move to be what it is on the low end
