Default 1983 2.8L heads

I have a 1983 Ranger 2.8L that had the valves sticking. Otherwise, it ran great. I got some heads off a 1985 Ranger 2.8L and had them checked out at the machine shop and put them on the motor. Now, it has a huge vacuum leak that I can't find. The salvage yard now tells me '85 heads won't interchange on an '83 motor. Does anyone know if '83 and '85 heads will interchange with each other?

So long as its a 2.8 it should work. Its still the same block from 83-85. However a 2.8 and 2.9 are NOT interchangeable. Possibly have a vacuum leak around the intake or carb. Other places to look are and vacuum lines that run around the carb. Try spraying carb cleaner or brake clean around to find the leak. Start the truck and the eingine should change RPMs when it picks up the spray.
89 Ranger- front and rear bagd on drop ibeams and custom 2 link.

85 Ranger- 4x4 31" tires. Soon to be V8 swapped with D35s and 8.8.
