Default Wondering if an older Ranger 2.9 is a worthy buy?

I'm always looking for an extra cab Ranger. I use to have a nice 92 4.0 extra cab but it was totaled by someone. It had plenty of room for what I use it for. I'm debating whether a nice older model Ranger would be as reliable than a newer Ranger. I know that most affordable vehicles now are front wheel drive and are all done at about 80,000 miles. I've never known much about the 2.9. Is it as reliable, less reliable, or about the same as the 3.0 or 4.0 OHV? Most of the Rangers in my local area that are in the $2500-$3000 range are 3.0. Anything below $1500 and there is always head gasket issues behind why they are selling it. I see a lot of older 2.9 and 4.0 but not highly as many with head gasket issues. Are 2.9 engine parts still easily available? Anything hard to do on them compared to the other Ranger engines?
